The American College of Surgeons recently announced that Saint Peter's University Hospital in New Brunswick had successfully completed its National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), placing the hospital's among the nation's elite in the level of comprehensive, multi-disciplinary care and treatment available to breast cancer patients. During the NAPBC's extensive review and evaluation of Saint Peter's breast care program — which is under the direction of Dr. McManus — the hospital was required to consistently demonstrate the capacity to: Use a multi-disciplinary team approach in offering patients a complete range of care and treatment options. Access and implement the full range of information and advice available from various educational and professional resources to support decisions made regarding treatment protocols. Collect and manage breast cancer data, including quality indicators of all sub-specialties involved in diagnosis and treatment. Implement, monitor and assess results obtained from improvements in care. Provide doctors and staff with access to ongoing educational programs covering outcomes of clinical trials and new treatment options. The NAPBC was established in 2008 to standardize the practice of using "coordinated interdisciplinary teams" in order to identify and implement the most effective breast cancer treatment programs. While a wide variety of care and treatment facilities are in operation, only centers that demonstrate they consistently "bring together all the members of the breast care team" qualify for accreditation. NAPBC accreditation is a voluntary process and participating breast centers must agree to monitor and report compliance with NAPBC standards while undergoing an on-site review every three years.
